Siem Reap Hosts Meeting

Siem Reap will play host to Asian parliamentarians when the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization comes to town from July 21 to July 23. The meeting on cultural and eco-tourism will cost $100,000 and will be attended by 50 to 60 guests from ASEAN, China, South Korea, Japan and 15 Cambodian officials, Chan Ven, the National Assembly's deputy secretary general., said at a news conference Thursday. Funcinpec parliamentarian Than Sina said Cambodia has great potential as a cultural and eco-tourism destination but lacks infrastructure. Kim San, secretary-general of the National Assembly, agreed: " [Critics] say we have gold but no paper to wrap it. Now we are making [paper]. Veng Sereyvuth, a Funcinpec lawmaker and president of the government's tourism authority, said the government is hoping to develop Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri provinces as tourist destinations in order to encourage visitors to stay longer than the current average of four to five days.
